Carpet Water Damage

When someone invests thousands of dollars in carpeting their home they do not want any type of damage to it. But there are times when it is unavoidable, such as water damage. The most widely carpet water damage is caused from pipes bursting and or leaking. There are also stains that come from on top of the carpet, such as spilling some sort of liquid on the carpet and it ends up getting down into the padding.

For severe water damage there are companies that specialize in repairing the water damage. It all depends on the type of carpet and the under padding if you need to hire a professional carpet restoration company. First you must determine the source of the water leak. This must be fixed first before beginning on taking care of the carpet. Once this is done then you can go on to having the water damage taken care of. Most carpet companies can help you. If the damage is just from a broken pipe or a leaky faucet, they can get your carpet looking new in a day, maybe two at the most.

If your carpet is damaged from a break of coty pipes, usually all it needs is a mold inhibitor or if the damage was caused by extreme flooding or a septic system, you want to be sure to have it treated to prevent E coli from starting. Most people though will have the carpet pulled out and lay down new carpet; they don’t want to take any chances. 

If you just have certain spots of water damage on your carpet, you might just need to cut out the damaged piece and replace it. Usually people have left over carpet from it being laid down. Cut out the damaged carpet piece and then fit a piece of new carpet snuggly where the damage is. Press down hard, some will use a bit of carpet glue to hold it in place. Another method of taking care of damaged carpet caused by water is to have it steamed cleaned professionally. They will come in and clean the carpet with steam and usually that will work. If you have a stain or damage of any kind that cannot not be taken care of by normal methods, more than likely you will need to replace the entire room of carpet.

When you do have carpet water damage, it must be dealt with immediately or you will run into many problems that will cost you more in the long run. In severe cases the padding under the carpet must be pulled up and probably replaced. This is an area that mold can start and spread. If this is the case the professionals suggest just replacing all of it, carpet and padding. Do not let it dry out, thinking no damage has been done, it has and it will fester and can cause illness. If the damage is severe let the professionals deal with it, they know what they are doing.
