Lined curtain panels will not allow light into the room, and are lined with two or three inner layers and can be made of cotton sateen, this will help with the shape of the panels. Thermal lining is great if you live in the desert as they block the heat, they may have plastic coating or even light weight metal on the backs to block the heat.
Linen/Sheer Curtain Panels
Some curtain panels are unlined, maybe a sheer material just for decoration. Some will inter mingle different colors to give it a dramatic effect.

There are curtain panels that have pleats in them and some do not. Pleats will help the curtain to hang right and are nice in draping. Pleats are made from gathering the material and tying them back with a sash or can just hang straight. Box pleats are nice to have, goblet pleats will do nicely with thick fancy material and give off an air of formality.
