Dog Pens

Dog pens are similar in concept to dog runs except that they are significantly smaller and intended for indoor use. The basic design is comprised of heavy gauge fencing that is 2-4 feet high and 16 feet in length. The fence breaks into hinged panels and wraps around to create an enclosed area. These hinges make the pen easy to put into storage or transport. They also allow the pens to be configured into almost any size or shape. Pens can also be ordered with sides made of mesh or canvas to soften them. These models are not as heavy, easier to carry, and will give your dog added comfort. However if our dog likes to chew things you are probably better off with the metal pen.

If you plan carefully, you can enjoy bringing your dog on vacation. In such an occasion a dog pen is a very useful accessory. Your dog will have a safe and comfortable place to relax and so will you. You won’t have to worry about being interrupted while you enjoy a favorite book on the beach or a candlelight dinner in your hotel room. And as most of us with pets know dogs can sometimes become unsettled when placed in new surroundings. For example, the dog may go to the bathroom on the carpet or chew up some of the furnishings.

To prevent any misbehavior on the part of your canine, bring along its pen and give it a comfortable and familiar place with toys to chew on and blankets to lay on. A pen can also help you in housebreaking your dog.

If you are training your puppy to go outside the pen can serve as a holding area until the puppy finishes its business. Because the pup thinks the space is his he will be more likely to hold it in until he is let outside. If you have several dogs that are getting rowdy and need a time out from each other, the pen can separate them until they clam down.

Dog pens are not intended to be used as full time housing and you should not leave your dog in there for extended periods of time. A dog can only have limited movements inside his pen and he still needs to access regular exercise. Dogs are social and affectionate creatures and love physical interaction with their owners. Leaving them stuck in their pens around the clock is not healthy treatment.

While a dog pen has many advantages, it does nothing to solve the problem of our dog escaping from your property if let outside. Extra precaution must be taken when walking your dog or playing with him outside, and while transferring him from the house to the pen if it is outdoors to make sure he doesn’t run off.
