Drywall Water Damage - Info and a DIY Repair Guide

Experiencing water problems is a hassle to anyone. Not only does it take time to repair the damage, it poses a nuisance to those in the household as well. When a house drywall is soaked in flood waters, or maybe wet because of leaks, it is a huge problem as it may destroy the wall of your house. You don't need to worry though as the purpose of this article is to teach you some helpful ways on how to fix drywall water damage without having to empty your pockets.

When we have a home, we spend a lot from our wages on things that make it comfortable and convenient to live in. We try our very best to protect it by having it built with a good, sturdy structure. However when forces of nature strike, we have no way of telling in advance as to how much damage it can cause unless we're already in it.

One must not be worried though. It is not the end of the world yet as there are solutions for your drywall water damage. This kind of damage is usually caused by leaks and flood or an overflow of water. Knowing where the leak has originated is the first thing to do. The extent of the leak can be determined if repair can be done by yourself or if some professional help must be obtained.

You might well remember that it is possible that the leak may not come from the wall itself but originate from the ceiling. When this happens it is possible that the water has slid down to the wall. What you need to do first is fix the leak on the ceiling which is the source. Fixing of leaks may be done by placing a good sealant.

When the leak is repaired, the next thing to do is repair the drywall water damage. First, the damaged portion must be separated from the rest of the wall. Doing this allows air to come in thus drying the innermost part. If a dehumidifier is present, this helps reduce the possibility of mold and mildew from forming as a dehumidifier speeds up the process of drying the wall.

Before doing anything else, you must make sure that it has dried up completely in and out so that mold cannot penetrate. Upon checking, if the inner part is still damp, get a fan and allow it to dry the inner part of the wall. If mold is already present, don't let anything else come in contact with it as it spreads faster once it's touched. Contact a professional mold remover. When the drywall is no longer wet, it's time to repair the wall. Protect your face with a mask to avoid inhalation of chemicals. Nail a patch to the drywall. Apply a joint compound to the joints and let this dry then smooth out with sandpaper then repaint the drywall.
