Marble is a soft variety of stone and it can stain easily. It absorbs liquid very easily. Because of this quality how to clean marble is an important question.

There are many products on the market today to help you with cleaning marble but the problem with most of them is that they are either ineffective or toxic. This is why it is important to choose non-toxic and natural cleaning products for your marble. Most people do not believe that it is possible to clean marble with natural products. In this day and age it is possible to say good bye to toxic cleaning products once and for all.

Go Green

It is not only about using a safer product for your home. Non-toxic products are also safer for the environment. Go green seems to be the new mantra these days and as a result people are buying more and more biodegradable products. Not only that, natural products will also not have strong acids which can actually do more harm than good in the long run. Marble is sensitive to acids and it will disintegrate over a period of time when exposed to harmful chemicals. As mentioned before going green is a fashionable thing these days and it has reached all corners of the globe. This has made biodegradable products much easier to find.

How To Clean Marble With Household Products

An age old and popular way on how to clean marble at home includes household products. Articles such as vinegar, lemon, baking soda and borax are good enough to get the job done.

These products are good for removing stains or any other unwanted markings. The important thing to remember is that after using these products you should use plain water to finish the job. This is because products such as vinegar and lemon have acid content but if you use baking soda along with it should neutralize the acid. Home made substitutes such as the above mentioned products also have negative side effects; this is why it is important to do as much research as possible before cleaning marble products.

Marble Countertops Abuse

Let’s not forget that marble countertops have to endure a lot of abuse, especially if it is located in the kitchen or bathroom. In the bathroom they will be exposed to such things as soap, shampoo, after shave lotion and so on. If it is located in the kitchen then god only knows as to what it can be exposed to. Many food items will have both acid and alkaline contained in it. Not only can that, it get scratched by kitchen utensils. Marble being calcium based will be sensitive to all these forms of attack. This is why over time the marble slab will still keep its shine on the perimeter but will loose its color in the center portion.

One remedy for these problems is to use a sealant made out of high quality solvent. There are good quality sealants available for stone, tile and grout. Generally for marble it is better to use a solvent based sealer, rather than a water based sealer. This is because it will penetrate the marble better and offer better quality protection. One thing that needs to be remembered is that if the marble top is not a single unit then the grout that joins the slabs will also have to be protected. Even after sealant is used it is better to use alkaline based cleaning products to keep that marble shining like new!
