There are many health insurance plans available from ones employer and usually dental and eye insurance is included as well. And people think their dental insurance covers everything. Unfortunately it does not, it just covers the basics. If you have kids that will need dental work–such as braces–it is not near enough and this is where supplemental dental insurance comes into play.

What Is Supplemental Dental Insurance?

Over thirty percent of Americans do not have enough dental insurance or none at all. Those who do have it do not have enough and will opt to buy supplemental dental insurance to cover out of pocket expenses and then some. This is what supplemental dental insurance is, it is extra coverage for braces for the kids, certain kinds of dental surgery, dentures and some will help with the dental implants.

Prepare Yourself

When choosing supplemental dental insurance for your family, there are many good dental insurance companies that will have what you need and can be affordable. Before paying out any kind of money, be sure you know what dental coverage you do have with the health insurance. You can then have a better idea on what you will need; with that information you can sit down with your dentist and figure out just what type of coverage you will need for you and your family that will cover one or two years of dental work.

Confusion

Many people will confuse supplemental dental insurance with the discount dental plans that are out there. There is a difference as a dental discount plan is just where the costs of the procedures are reduced, some can cost you only five dollars a month. Whereas supplemental dental insurance covers the special procedures, saving you a lot of out of the pocket money, not at a discount price.

AFLAC

AFLAC is a good example having supplemental dental insurance, they will have a certain set amount of money that they will pay you to get your teeth cleaned, checked and x-rayed once a year. Depending on which company your employer has their dental insurance with, they might even carry a supplemental dental plan you can get into as well.

Aetna Supplemental Dental Insurance

Aetna has many different plans when choosing your supplement dental insurance plans, as do many large health insurance companies. Do some research on them and you will be able to see which one fits your needs and your pocket books. With more and more people retiring today they too need good dental insurance when they do retire. Being a member of AARP is a good example of that and it is quite affordable.

AARP

With AARP you can still keep your dentist that you have had for years, and they allow up to three cleaning per year. They also offer emergency care, crowns and so much more. They work with Delta Dental Insurance which is one of the oldest dental benefits companies around.

Medicare

Medicare coverage of dental services is very limited it doesn’t cover most dental procedures such as tooth extractions, fillings and cleaning, you will be paying out of your pocket for these items and more.
