Wireless Fence For Dogs

By Berry Spoke

Wireless dog fences were created as an alternative to the underground wire fences that were developed to keeps pets within the intended vicinity. While underground wire fences were a drastic improvement of the original dog fences that included a physical barrier, wireless dog fences were seen as a way to make the whole process of pet containment more efficient. Like dog fences that require a physical wire, wireless fences use radio signals to transmit information and commands.

The difference is that instead of using a wire to outline the intended perimeter, wireless fences function by emitting a radio signal from a central unit. When a pet travels outside a set radius from this unit, its collar provides the warning sounds and mild electrical shocks that are intended to teach the pet its acceptable roaming territory.

Wireless + GPS

There are also some wireless dog fences that use GPS to track pet movements. Just as with the radio version, the GPS signals determine proximity to the perimeter of the virtual fence. The distinction of course is that GPS signals and not radio waves are used. As technology continues to become more sophisticated, so have the capabilities that wireless dog fences can offer. The possible range of the radio waves is always increasing and that allows for an ever-expanding coverage area for your dog.

Today you can be sure to find a wireless dog fence strong enough to serve your needs no matter how much space you want to provide to your pet. Dog fences have come a long way since they were first developed, and wireless fences are the latest phase of improvement. Wireless dog fences offer many benefits and few disadvantages to the alternatives.

Wireless Dog Fence Advantages

The main advantages of wireless dog fences over other options are obvious and substantial. First and foremost is the fact that no wires need to be installed to mark the perimeter of the fence. This eliminates the expense of both the wire and the labor required for installation. Many times the cost of installation is nearly as much as the actual system itself. And not only are current expenses reduced, but also potential future ones. There are many things that could occur to a homeowner that would entail removing the underground wires or physical barrier of other types of dog fences. For example the construction of a structure or installation of service lines could call for the temporary or permanent removal of the fence. Even selling a home could cause a problem if the buyer does not want to have the wire buried in his new property. There is also the potential for the wire itself to be disturbed by burrowing animals or erosion. All these liabilities can be forgotten with a wireless fence.

It's Portable
Portability is another advantage wireless systems enjoy over traditional ones. If an individual does decide to move or go on vacation, the wireless system can be easily transferred and eliminate the need to install a whole new fence. If somebody simply wants to give their dog more room to play or restrict their exercise area for a small period of time, adjustments can made immediately on the central unit. No need to call a professional or toil yourself.

There are also important differences between GPS and radio wireless fences. The main one is the added flexibility allowed by the GPS version. With GPS the boundary can be more easily adjusted than with radio. And within that boundary “island” areas can be included that would require the purchase of additional central units with the radio system. The benefit of the radio version is the superior accuracy of the boundary. This is due to small tolerances inherent to any GPS system.

Wireless Dog Fencing Disadvantages

There are few disadvantages for wireless fence for dogs. They provide all the benefits of invisible wire fences, but without the need to install wires and the corresponding costs. With the GPS version, there is the remote possibility that the transmission of the signals could be interrupted due to satellite errors. Likewise, there could be a problem with the central unit in either the radio or GPS version.

Perhaps the most serious disadvantage is the potential diversion or loss of signal due to competing signals. Because both radio waves and GPS signals need to travel through the air to reach their destination, there is always the chance that another signal or electronic device will cause some distortion. While these incidents are extremely improbable, they remain a minor concern.

Informative Hub. I feel the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages! Wireless fences are affordable, don't disrupt your landscaping and most of all protect your beloved canine!

I purchased the PERIMETER wireless dog fence unit and was very disappointed. The unit is horrible, just like the companies customer service... do not purchase thise unit. The HAVAHART wireless fence is a much better and much more consistant in maintaining its signal.
